Close your eyes. Think of yourself as a child. You are on a beach with golden sand. The water is calm, all shades of blue, with light green and turquoise hues. The sun is scorching your back as you sit cross legged on the waterfront. You are holding a huge half-moon shaped slice of fresh watermelon. Your parents dunked it in the water as soon as you got to the beach, and now it’s nice and chilled. As you bite into it, an explosion of its sweet, aromatic flavour takes place in your mouth, and its juices drip from your chin to your chest. You are happy!
If you are Greek, the above paragraph is almost definitely a scene of your childhood. If you are not Greek, we urge you to take a holiday in Greece and experience this. Even if you are not a child. Adults deserve some genuine happiness too, no?
Greek watermelons are famous for their sweetness. They are the ideal summer food, filling, refreshing and truly beneficial. Watermelons are full of antioxidants, vitamin C, amino acids, dietary fibre, nutrients and enzymes. All of the above have amazing health benefits, such as cardiovascular benefits, deposition of fat prevention, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits to name a few. A regular super food health ‘bomb’!
This summer, to show our love and appreciation for the Greek watermelon especially, we are introducing ‘The Real Greek Watermelon Month’, and we have just added 3 new watermelon dishes to our menus:
- Greek watermelon, feta cheese & mint salad, with honey and saffron dressing.
- Greek watermelon, grilled halloumi & pomegranate salad, with lemon dressing.
- Greek watermelon & lemon sorbet, with crushed pistachios.
These savoury and sweet combinations are typical of the ways we Greeks like to enjoy our watermelon in the summer.
The combination of watermelon with cheese is a Greek favourite, and our Head Chef, Alan May took this combo up a notch by dressing the watermelon & feta salad with an aromatic Greek saffron and honey dressing, and the halloumi watermelon salad with crunchy pomegranates and lemon. The sorbet is made with real lemon juice, for a truly refreshing feeling, and the pistachios give it that extra crunch.
Of course, our secret to the amazing flavour of those dishes is this: we source our watermelons straight from Greece!
We found one of the best Greek producers, the Karkavitsas family, who have been growing pure watermelons in Ilia, in the Peloponnese region of Greece, for decades.
His watermelons travel around 2,000 miles to get to us, but it’s all worth it! Their flavour is genuine and just amazing. Our producer, being a head of a family business, believes in keeping everything pure and that’s what makes him one of the best watermelon producers in Greece.
The best watermelons are the ripest, so our producer’s tips to selecting the right watermelon are: look for a darker red coloured flesh if your watermelon is sliced, or for a yellowish coloured lighter spot on its skin. Not green or white, which means it’s not fully ripened yet. Also, the ‘tapping’ Greek method of choosing a watermelon is a must, as a fully ripened watermelon will produce a deeper, hollower ‘bass’ sound when tapped!
We hope you enjoy our new Greek watermelon dishes as much as we do, and with every crunchy watermelon bite you take, you are mentally transported to a sunny Greek beach!
